Like a butterfly unfolding its wings, Butterfly House reimagines an Edwardian home with a balance of heritage and modernity. A sculptural, L-shaped extension enhances natural light, flow, and openness, while a series of courtyards breathe life and connection into the design. Restored period details and a natural material palette complete the transformation, creating a home that feels both timeless and renewed.

Butterfly House is a thoughtful renovation and extension of a tired Edwardian dwelling, named for its distinctive rear addition where the roofline subtly mirrors the outstretched wings of a butterfly. The architectural form enhances both function and flow—strengthening the relationship between old and new, and between the interior and landscape—while honouring the home’s original charm.

The existing home, once compartmentalised and dimly lit, no longer met the needs of a contemporary family. The design introduces courtyards, strategic openings, and a fluid floor plan that encourage movement, connection, and abundant natural light—particularly to the south-facing rear.

Blending contemporary Australian influences with the grace of Edwardian architecture, the interior embraces a natural material palette and a calm, refined aesthetic. This timeless backdrop allows art, furniture, and design pieces to take centre stage, while ensuring the home remains practical and adaptable for everyday family life—equally suited to quiet moments or lively gatherings.

Period details such as pressed metal ceilings and original fireplaces were carefully restored, with the front façade refreshed to preserve its character while evolving it for modern living. The butterfly-inspired extension, with its expressive ceiling and dual courtyards, forms the heart of the home—enhancing light, functionality, and connection throughout. The result is a design that celebrates renewal, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of a home that has gracefully taken flight into a new era.
