U House

Revived heritage home for a young, busy family of 3, balances life with light filled spaces and connectivity between each zone.

The U House is located on one of Thornburys most charming suburban streets in Melbournes north. It is an extension and renovation of a period home that was originally built in the 1920’s, bringing to life the charm of the old and enhancing it with space, light and a modern edge. 

Strong emphasis was centered on creating a forever home for our clients that could help and enhance everyday living, working, and entertaining, whilst withstanding the test of time. With these requirements in mind a U shape addition with central courtyard was devised and became the link which brought the whole design together.

To avoid south facing living spaces a courtyard formation was essential. It opened up the rear of the home to northern solar gains and uses biophilic principles where possible by incorporating indoor outdoor living, and including other natural elements in the materiality,  pool and fireplace. Which remain visible throughout the entire new addition.

Inside the extension each space is knitted together, spilling in to one another whilst remaining independent. This entertainers dream acts as the cog in the wheel, mediating 5 interconnected spaces, all of which revolve around the generous decking, outdoor kitchen and green courtyard. The central pool ties it all together, providing opportunities for reflection, cooling & mood enhancing qualities. 

Internally high ceilings marry with modest & light, durable materials, with black and white contrasting features which reflect the exterior palette and emphasize the feeling of space and height. Textural natural finishes add warmth and sensory elements to further enhance connectivity to nature & the home itself.
