Kendall St

Kendall Street is a dual occupancy residence in Elwood, designed as two distinct yet cohesive dwellings that sit comfortably within their established streetscape. The project negotiates the demands of the dual occupancy typology without compromising on amenity, craft, or material depth.

The perforated brick gable is the project’s defining gesture, rising above the roofline to give each dwelling a clear identity while sheltering the balcony below with filtered light and a degree of privacy from the street. The pale brick reads as both contemporary and grounded, connecting the new work to the texture of the surrounding neighbourhood without replicating it.

The material palette is restrained and consistent across both dwellings. Warm American walnut joinery wraps the kitchens and upper corridors, concealing doorways and services within a continuous timber lining that draws the eye through each floor. Marble benchtops bring natural variation and tactility to the kitchen, while polished plaster walls soften the interior atmosphere throughout. At ground level, titanium travertine anchors the kitchen plinth and bathroom, its cross-cut surface adding depth to the palette without competing with the warmth of the timber.

The living rooms are oriented toward private courtyard gardens, with large glazed openings drawing the outside in and connecting daily life to the landscape. Upstairs, herringbone oak floors and timber-lined corridors reinforce a sense of crafted domesticity that carries through every room.

Kendall Street demonstrates that dual occupancy need not flatten character. By grounding both dwellings in a shared but richly layered palette, the project produces two residences that are individually considered and collectively resolved.
